Ship delivery gets Greener

Global ship delivery specialists, International Maritime Services (IMS) has introduced a carbon offset option for all delivery voyages, through a strategic alliance with Yacht Carbon Offset, the Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certified specialists.

Under this programme, the greenhouse gas emissions from the fuel burned by participating vessels will be counterbalanced by equivalent emissions reductions from verified green energy projects.

Brendan Cooley, IMS Chief Operating Officer said "IMS is concerned about climate change and is committed to managing our operations in an environmentally sustainable manner.

As such, we are the first ship delivery company in the world to offer clients a carbon offset initiative maintaining our focus to work in conjunction with them and customize deliveries to suit individual requirements."

Yacht Carbon Offset's Managing Director Mark Robinson commented: "IMS regularly handles ocean passage-making for yacht and other commercial vessel clients. Passage planning always includes assessing the fuel requirement and so it is straightforward to include an invitation to carbon offset this fuel.

With increasing environmental awareness across all vessel types, we are delighted to offer our carbon offsetting service in partnership with the team at IMS."

Yacht Carbon Offset

Yacht Carbon Offset provides a clear, auditable way to balance out the "carbon footprint" of a vessel's engines and generators. Tonne for tonne, the yacht's emissions are offset by equivalent greenhouse gas reductions from projects such as renewable power. Each project depends on the carbon funding, and Yacht Carbon Offset has Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification, so Clients know that their action makes a real impact on net emissions.

The "pay as you go" service is calculated from the fuel quantities specified, whether a single delivery passage or for the whole season's cruising. There's no onboard equipment and there is no long term obligation for the yacht or ship.

Carbon Offsetting is of potential interest to owners or charterers wishing to take practical steps to minimise environmental impact, and also may be welcomed by prominent individuals or businesses that carefully position their "brand". It is particularly relevant when cruising in environmentally sensitive areas.

Word or Two from the Director's Chair...

"If I have to sum up the past two years without going into too much detail, I'd say we've stretched our legs, stepped out of our comfort zone and broadened our horizons. In doing so, we've managed to look at the industry through fresh eyes and take on some exciting new projects.

Besides our usual delivery work and sea trials, we're also keeping busy by managing and crewing two luxury motor yachts, handling the ISM management for another and, most excitingly, we're chartering out Perth's most luxurious charter boat (www.oceanmagiccharters.com.au). In the office we're concentrating on getting our ISO and ISM processes completed, which as the guys will tell you, is a gigantic task to say the least.

So as you can see, by taking some risks and expanding our ideas, IMS has cemented itself as a fully fledged maritime service company, proving beyond a shadow of doubt that, as our slogan promises…The Ocean Is Our Business" Kim Cleggett – Director

Stepping up

In January 2011 Brendan Cooley was promoted to Chief Operating Officer, taking on the daily responsibilities of running IMS and ensuring that they keep the momentum of their bold new strategy moving forward. This has enabled Kim Cleggett to free himself from operational issues, giving him the time needed to lead the company into the future and on to bigger things.

Stepping out

In May 2011, Phil Tapley (The Philby) was given the opportunity to take up the position as Chief Engineer on one of the motor yachts being crewed/ managed by IMS in the Mediterranean. Although there is no set date for his return at this stage, Phil remains in the employment of IMS and will return to their offices in Western Australia once his stint on the yacht is completed.

Bold step

Another bold step taken in 2009 was their grand entrance into Singapore. The office is run by their Regional Manager; Leigh Snelling who relocated to Singapore from her home in Melbourne. – "I'm really loving the people and the culture which has made developing the IMS brand here a great pleasure for me"

A Few Firsts

Although IMS has relocated vessels to and from countries all over the globe, they recently did their first ever out of Eastern Europe. The MV Polar Pearl was laid up in Lyngdal Norway for three years and had to be delivered to her new owners in Batam Indonesia. Polar Pearl was a first for International Maritime Services on a couple of counts:

  • The first RoLo vessel we have delivered
  • A crew that looked like the United Nations with a Lithuanian Master, an Australian Chief Officer, a Russian Chief Engineer and all other crew from Lithuania and Indonesia.

The delivery commenced in December 2010 in the midst of the coldest European winter on record. Their Singaporean Shore Manager commented that he could only go on the deck for 10 minutes at a time, and that was if he was wearing all the clothes he took with him.

The crew encountered very heavy seas in the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, giving them a challenging delivery for much of the journey. Polar Pearl will be converted to a cattle carrier to run between Darwin and Indonesia. Her refit will take eight months in the Singaporean BKM Group owned Indonesian Shipyard.

Trialling Austal's Largest Catamaran

After having been launched in January 2011 the commissioning seatrials on Austal's 113 metre catamaran "Leonora Christina" were successfully completed early in May 2011. To carry out these trials IMS provided the Captain, Chief Engineer and Chief Officer. IMS is Austal's preferred commissioning company due to their vast knowledge of these large ferries' mechanical, electrical and propulsion systems. Due to their captain's and engineer's many years of experience with trialling new build ferries and their (the captain's) superior manoeuvring skills, IMS is requested from operators and shipyards all over the world to carry out complex sea trials and/or training courses. For more details on the Leonora Christina's specifications go to www.austal.com

IMS Delivers the M.V. Carrie

IMS completed another successful delivery with relocation of the brand new "MV Carrie" from Australian shipbuilder Aluminium Boats' Brisbane facilities to her new home in Madang (PNG). The crew arrived in Brisbane a couple of days earlier for familiarisation and to ready the vessel, then after departing Brisbane they shot up the coast bound for Madang via Townsville, Cairns and Alotau. As part of the delivery package for the M.V. Carrie the Master and Chief Engineer stayed on after the vessel's arrival to familiarise and train the new crew. Our congratulations go to the vessel's new owners - Ramu Nico Management (MCC) Ltd.

Owners Representation for 3 FCB's

IMS has continued its long association with leading Nigerian company ARCO Marine and Oil Field Services Limited with a contract to act as their Owner's Representative during the building of 3 Fast Crew Boats being constructed at SBF Shipyard's Fremantle facilities. The pictured vessel is the first and smallest at 15 metres and can carry 20 pax at 31 knots. The other two are 20 and 25 metres long and can carry 30 and 70 pax respectively at 31 knots. Each vessel is powered by MAN engines coupled to Hamilton water-jets.

IMS has also been commissioned by ARCO to write and carry out the crew training program for all 3 vessels once they have been transported to Nigeria, All crew, once they have successfully completed the training program, will then be Type Rated to each vessel.

Luxury Charter Boat

IMS joined the charter boat industry in Western Australia last year by importing the luxurious 53 ft Riviera "Ocean Magic" into the state. There are plenty of these vessels in WA but this is the only one that is surveyed to carry passengers. A three hour Swan River cruise, a 7 hour Rottnest day trip, or even a few days overnight at Rottnest have never been this lavish for those people living here or just visiting Perth. The "Ocean Magic" is licensed to carry 22 pax on the river and 12 pax out to the island. She is fully licensed and they can supply catering to suit your tastes. IMS is looking forward to another successful season this year so book early to avoid disappointment www.oceanmagiccharters.com.au

Come and visit, we're easy to find

Since 2009 International Maritime Services has been located in the suburb of O'Connor, south of Perth in Western Australia. This office is more central to the shipyards and other maritime related companies and more spacious after spending many years in our "cosy" Fremantle offices.

Since adding a Mezzanine deck to the warehouse attached to the office IMS can now extend our office space if necessary. We also have plenty of much needed room for the delivery equipment that we have accumulated over the years.

And Now for the Plug...

  • Delivery logistics – any vessel anywhere at any time
  • Vessel management and crewing
